Thanks for joining me on this quick reflection about gratitude!
The holidays can be a stressful time and often overbusy. Gratitude is a mindfulness practice which helps us to slow down and stay in the present moment. The simple things like your physical health, ability to get up in the morning, food on your table if you are lucky, are are all things that we sometimes take for granted. What are three things you are grateful for today?
Understanding Gratitude and Its Role in Mental Health
Enhancing Emotional Well-Being Through Gratitude
Humans can have up to 60,000 thoughts per day. Research shows that many thoughts we humans have during the day often have a negative bias. This is a built in self protective mechanism which had a functional use before we our ancestors acquired homes and other self-protective structures. While maintaining awareness to possible threats is important, we can miss out on the small daily miracle moments in our presence. Gratitude helps us to focus on things that are currently in our life that we appreciate. This practice helps to cultivate postive emotions and feelings of contentment.
Reducing negative emotions is key in gratitude’s role in lowering stress, anxiety, and depression levels. Overall, this strengthens emotional regulation: gratitude helps manage difficult feelings more effectively.
Strengthening Relationships and Social Connections
Gratitude fosters empathy and reduces aggression, improving social interactions.
We may not always agree with the people or loved ones in our life. It is very common for people to begin focusing on the negative aspects if a person or situation in conflict rather than seeing what is still working well. Expressing gratitude promotes stronger bonds with family, friends, and colleagues.
Practical Ways to Cultivate Gratitude Daily
Keeping a gratitude journal to record and reflect on what brings joy and appreciation. Just make a list...you don't have to write alot down. Not a writer? Draw a symbol or give your day a number from 1-5 (1-Just made it through the day to 5-really great day) and list one or two things that went well.

Expressing gratitude verbally or through acts of kindness to reinforce positive cycles. Say thank you to someone and specifically tell them what you are thankful for.

Conclusion
Practicing gratitude has immense health benefits: improved mental, emotional, social, and physical well-being. I hope that you begin to incorporate this practice in your life on a weekly basis, if not everyday. Start small (just pick a day), stay patient and you will begin to experience the positive effects of this practice.
