What is restorative yoga?

As an RYT-200, I practice and teach Restorative yoga to help individuals achieve holistic wellness.

Restorative Yoga comes to us from BKS Iyengar (December 14, 1918 – August 20, 2014).  Iyengar authored Light on Yoga and is thought of as a worldwide authority on yoga.

The goal of Restorative Yoga is to activate the body’s relaxation response and bring total relaxation and surrender to the body. Unlike a power flow class, Restorative Yoga does not seek to find the deepest sensation.  Rather, it seeks no sensation at all.

Restorative Yoga is about finding the deepest opening into relaxation that is available. The body feels completely supported by props which enables complete release of all tension that the body holds. Restorative Yoga is a practice that involves active relaxation, an invitation to practice mindfulness.  The focus is not on the quantity of poses but rather the quality.

Restorative yoga can be a good practice when you have a more intense athletic program that you participate in, experience alot of stress in your daily life, or are recoving from an injury. Please consult with your physician if you are concerned that you may have a health condition that may prohibit you from participating.
